Vancouver 2010 Podium by James Lee & Leo Obstbaum

Designed by James Lee and Leo Obstbaum, the individual, and team podiums for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics are influenced by the mountain range in the hosting city and surrounding areas. Constructed from Western red cedar and Douglas fir donated by communities, businesses, individuals and First Nations from across British Columbia, the podiums range in size from 4.8 metres to 15.3 m in length, 1.7 m to five m in depth and half a metre tall at their highest point ― the spot reserved for gold medallists. The lightest podiums weigh approximately 200 kilograms while others range up to 260 kg. They will be used in 86 Olympic and 64 Paralympic Victory Ceremonies and are easily accessible for all athletes. Lee and Obstbaum are also responsible for the design of the trays that will be used to present the Olympic medals. The wooden trays feature a non-slip surface to keep the medals from moving.

Vancouver-based yoga gear specialists, Lululemon have danced around VANOC’s exclusive Canadian marketing rights to Olympic brands by releasing a recent collection under the name: “Cool Sporting Event That Takes Place in British Columbia Between 2009 & 2011 Edition”. The hooded sweatshirts, toques and T-shirts are being sold at venues in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C. just two months before the Winter Games kick off. By way of Somalia, Toronto-based recording indie-hip hop artist K’Naan will have his work heard by millions and millions world-wide this summer during the 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted by South Africa. K’Naan wrote a new version of his song, Wavin’ Flag — which was previously featured on his latest studio album, Troubadour — to be selected as the official song of the world renown futbol tournament. London, Ontario’s Jolene “Nitro Girl” Van Vugt is the latest addition to DC Moto’s elite moto x team. You might recongize this Canadian beauty from the MTV series, Nitro Circus. As the first woman to join the DC Moto team, Jolene brings with her an impressive resume from the motocross world. In addition to holding Guinness World Records, Van Vugt was the first female to backflip a full-size dirt bike.

GSP will meet 16-3, Thiago Alves to defend his UFC Welterweight Championship at UFC 100 tomorrow. The fight is the co-main event at the milestone broadcast live from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. Georges St-Pierre bumped his record up to 18-2 after defeating B.J. Steve Nash: Showdown in Downtown

Back in June 2008, Steve Nash held the first Showdown in Chinatown, a charity soccer event organized with NBA and world soccer stars to benefit children’s programs on 3 continents. The event is back and this year it will hit two locations. On June 24th The Showdown in Chinatown will hit Sarah D. Roosevelt Park in New York City and on September 19th The Showdown in Downtown will visit Vancouver at David Lam Park.

The event in Vancouver will benefit the Steve Nash Foundation. The Showdowns will feature international basketball and soccer all-stars: Steve Nash, Thierry Henry, Yao Ming, Claudio Reyna, Tony Parker, Adrian Mutu, Grant Hill, Giovanni van Brockhurst, Raja Bell, Ivan Cordoba, Baron Davis, Javier Zanetti and Chris Bosh.

Reigning Champ x Fight Night

Acknowledging the release of Fight Night: Round 4, Canadian designers at CYC Design Corporation have put out a very limited line of Reigning Champ x Fight Night collaboration products.The release includes two Reigning Champ Classic Zip Hoodies which pay homage to Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, and current best pound-for-pound fighter, Manny Pacquiao. Both hoodies display the records of each respective fighter.

The collaboration has also landed Reigning Champ brand recognition in the game. Fight Night: Round 4 features Reigning Champ gear as an option for the fighters.
