Toronto Bleeds 3D

Toronto Bleeds is the latest work from Toronto filmmaker Reg Hartt. A 40-minute stream of unedited footage from the morning after the G20 conclusion, Toronto Bleeds offers a new angle non-existent in the numerous news broadcasts and viral videos of the events. Shot in 3D, Toronto Bleeds is about voicing a “quiet anger [which] is more important than loud, obnoxious anger”. The film has no score or audio, but the silence plays into a thematic role based around this sense of “quiet anger”.

The film is screening at 6pm until July 8 at The Cineforum at 463 Bathurst Street, Toronto. Donations will be accepted for admission.

One Way or Another

A sequel to last summer’s successful “Smile On Your Brother” project, “One Way or Another” will feature over 50 artist-designed skateboards in a travelling, nation-wide art show. In support of Contributor — an initiative that aims to provide skateboards to disadvantaged youths in Canada, Society6 and Club Mumble have collaborated on the project to curate 25 artists and collectives from around the world to create orginal boards that will be sold, with all proceeds going directly to kids across the country. Unique to last year’s format, “One Way or Another” supporters will pre-purchase an artist’s time to design a board, so when the finished product has a surprise element.

The 1 of 1 Project

Winnipeg-based Chris Watchorn has been busy preparing the launch of The 1 of 1 Project, an event that will see a mix of artists express their talents on a blank Vans sneaker as their canvas. With goals aimed at promoting the local Winnipeg creative scene alongside raising funds for The Children’s Hospital Foundation of Winnipeg, The 1 of 1 Project will feature participants: Mark Dean Veca, Phil Annand, Larry Luk, and Watchhorn himself. Vancouver 2010 Podium by James Lee & Leo Obstbaum

Designed by James Lee and Leo Obstbaum, the individual, and team podiums for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics are influenced by the mountain range in the hosting city and surrounding areas. Constructed from Western red cedar and Douglas fir donated by communities, businesses, individuals and First Nations from across British Columbia, the podiums range in size from 4.8 metres to 15.3 m in length, 1.7 m to five m in depth and half a metre tall at their highest point ― the spot reserved for gold medallists. The lightest podiums weigh approximately 200 kilograms while others range up to 260 kg. They will be used in 86 Olympic and 64 Paralympic Victory Ceremonies and are easily accessible for all athletes. Lee and Obstbaum are also responsible for the design of the trays that will be used to present the Olympic medals. The wooden trays feature a non-slip surface to keep the medals from moving.

Signalnoise for Haiti

Signalnoise, the online portfolio of Halifax-based artist James White, is currently running a campaign in order to aide the disaster relief fund to help Haiti. James created this poster to raise awareness for the cause. This past week, 100% of sales from the Signalnoise store has been donated directly in support of those effected by the massive earthquake.

Lululemon: Cool Sporting Event…Between 2009 & 2011 Edition

Vancouver-based yoga gear specialists, Lululemon have danced around VANOC’s exclusive Canadian marketing rights to Olympic brands by releasing a recent collection under the name: “Cool Sporting Event That Takes Place in British Columbia Between 2009 & 2011 Edition”. The hooded sweatshirts, toques and T-shirts are being sold at venues in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C. just two months before the Winter Games kick off. By way of Somalia, Toronto-based recording indie-hip hop artist K’Naan will have his work heard by millions and millions world-wide this summer during the 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted by South Africa. K’Naan wrote a new version of his song, Wavin’ Flag — which was previously featured on his latest studio album, Troubadour — to be selected as the official song of the world renown futbol tournament. The Motown 50 Medley Featuring Melanie Fiona

Last Thursday in Detroit, Toronto recording artist Melanie Fiona was part of the American Thanksgiving Day halftime entertainment at the Detroit Lions game. Alongside the rising Canadian star, Universal Motown artists Forever The Sickest Kids, Vita Chambers, Kem, Hal Linton and Shontelle performed the Motown 50th anniversary melody. The singer-songwriter has been a rising success with her debut album, The Bridge continuing to see tracks on the Billboard`s top 100 charts.

The Midway State Interview: Nathan Ferraro

The Midway State is currently touring across Canada headlining with the Stereos, the Artist Life, and the Envy. The alternative-rock band, which originated in Collingwood, will make its way through the West Coast before returning to perform a series of shows in Ontario. Before heading West, I got a chance to sit down with lead singer Nathan Ferraro after one of their shows to ask him a few questions.

Q: Every artist is inspired to create music. What is your inspiration?

A: I am inspired by magic when it comes to singing and writing lyrics, from everywhere, from art and the world.

Q: Having won an MMVA is a great success for such a new band at the time of the award. For some bands this would be a boost of confidence and a Kanye ego to take on the world. Did winning the award boost your confidence about the band?

A: No, our confidence didn’t change at all. We are just very grateful and lucky that we have such strong fans. Our fans are stronger than many others. Hopefully this tour with the Stereos will also bring a new variety of fans.

Q: Your brother Christian Ferraro is in the band, Trainlight. You both are the singer and pianist of your bands, with a similar style in music. As brothers do you ever become competitive?

A: You can’t be competitive with art. We both love each others music, we play and write together. Hopefully in the near future he will be able to play some shows with us.

Q: The song Never Again is a song full of deep feelings. As a listener I connect with the song and it makes me feel all the emotions I went through during a relationship of distance, what is the song about?

A: Never Again is about being in love with someone and having them leave. Having them gone and never coming back again. Hence… Never Again.

Their most recent EP was released in May 2007. Ferraro has since collabrated with Carly Rae Jespen making his song, Change for you, a duet. The City Life Film Project is a groundbreaking initiative set forward by Toronto Emergency Task Force member, Calum deHartog in partnership with Gavin Sheppard’s The Remix Project, and Temple Street Productions. Calum is an accomplished filmmaker with the goal of reducing crime in Toronto by connecting with inner-city youth through the result of the innovative project — 3 world class short films.
